Anti-Semitism
in the Arab World
On October
28, 2003, Rep. Waxman issued a statement condemning the
anti-Semitic remarks made by Malaysian Prime Minister Mohamad
Mahathir during his keynote address at the Islamic Summit
Conference. His statement also expressed strong support
for H.Res. 409, a resolution calling upon the international
community to join the United States in rebuking Mahathir's
dangerous incitement.
On November
4, 2002, Rep. Waxman was joined by 45 Members of Congress
in sending a letter urging Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak
to take immediate action against the upcoming broadcast
of "Horseman Without A Horse." The television
series is based on the Protocols of the Elders of Zion,
an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory fabricated in Czarist
Russia to scapegoat and foment violence against Jews.
In November
2001, Rep. Waxman sent a letter urging Secretary of State
Colin Powell to denounce a meeting being organized by the
Arab League and the Organization of the Islamic Conference
solely to isolate and condemn Israel through an unprecedented
invocation of the Fourth Geneva Convention. The letter also
raised concern that the danger of such rhetoric has been exacerbated
by virulent anti-Semitic incitement in Arab media.
In
June 2001, Rep. Waxman sent a letter signed by 140 Members of
Congress urging European Union (EU) Secretary-General Javier
Solana to vocally condemn the unrelenting rise of anti-Semitism
in Europe.
